Box Office: ‘Kong’ Is King

The box office had a new ruler this weekend. Kong: Skull Island (Chris Tilly’s review) decimated the competition and industry expectations, leading the weekend with over $60 million. This is a great win for Warner Bros., especially since Kong: Skull Island is looking to kick off their MonsterVerse movie series. It will be interesting to see how much Kong drops next weekend since Beauty and the Beast will likely capture every demographic.

Meanwhile, holdovers Logan (my review) and Get Out (my review) performed more than admirably. March has been a stellar month for the movies, proving that the movies season really starts three months into the year. It’s great to see these films get their due because they really are good flicks. Heck, as it stands, the wide release films we have are all great. Get out to the movies.

The Numbers Game

Each week, I will guess how much wide-release films will be making on their opening weekend. My estimates come from my heart and my gut. You’d think I’d use my brain, but that makes far too much sense.

Last Week:

Kong: Skull Island
My Guess: $35,000,000
Actual: $61,015,000
Result: Love being wrong with a movie like this. Good to know people still love their giant monster movies.

This week:

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast

What is the ceiling for Beauty and the Beast? No one can be certain. It’s already outselling films like Captain America: Civil War and Finding Dory when it comes to pre-orders. This is a phenomenon and they are always tough to judge. It’s definitely going to open above $100 million, but could it skirt close to $200 million? I usually stay more conservative with my guesses, but this one feels like it’s going to explode.

My guess: $160,000,000

The Belko Experiment

Need some Disney counterprogramming? The Belko Experiment is going to be your pick for the weekend. Written by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), this is getting a very limited release so don’t expect it to make a big impact. But, the Battle Royale concept in an office building sounds like fun for all of us who like our movies weird and violent (*proudly raises hand*).

My guess: $4,000,000

See you next week, box office buddies!
