The headlines will all go towards the close race between The Revenant and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but Daddy’s Home has pulled in a very quiet tally that will eventually crest at over $130,000,000. That’s no small potatoes, demonstrating the film’s served as perfect counter-programming to the complex and oftentimes dark material that consumes Oscar season. The Revenant made a real run for the top spot and was leading going into Saturday, but ultimately fell to the reigning champ. An estimated $38,000,000 would have won most January weekends, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn’t a regular film and its success continues to change the game when it comes to enduring box office.
JJ Abrams’ blockbuster pulled in an amazing $41,630,000 in its fourth weekend and while it may finally be dethroned by either Ride Along 2 or 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi few would argue its impact. There’s no reason to assume it won’t enjoy several more weekends in the nine digit range.
What’s Next?
Michael Bay blows up a lot less things than normal (in theory) in 13 Hours: The Secret of Benghazi. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart return in the sequel I suppose some people asked for, Ride Along 2. Norm of the North takes a stab at the family genre with voice talents like Rob Schneider, Ken Jeong, and Heather Graham on board. It should make for a pretty split bit of business though it’ll be interesting to see what becomes of The Revenant from here on. It was an expensive film to make and it did well at the Golden Globes, but it’s the kind of prestige film that typically peaks early and only sticks with tremendous buzz. It’s not the easiest film to watch so it’s the real wild card next weekend.
We’ll be there to tell you about it.
