Witches and vampires are about to take over the CW once more thanks to a fall lineup featuring the reboot of Charmed and the just-announced Vampire Diaries spinoff, Legacies.
Network execs clearly have faith in the franchise, as a pilot for the spinoff was never even shot. Legacies will follow a new generation of witches, vampires, and werewolves attending The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted in an effort to learn how to control their wicked impulses and instead become the heroes they want to be.
Meanwhile, the return of Charmed will follow a new set of three sisters who discover they have supernatural powers: Maggie can hear people’s thoughts, Mel can freeze time, and Macy has telekinetic powers. The ladies eventually learn that they are witches and that they’re stronger together before supernatural antics surely ensue.
The CW is moving from five nights of original programming to six with the addition of Sunday nights this fall, featuring Supergirl and Charmed in what the network has dubbed a night of “empowered women.”
Wednesday nights will also have a theme thanks to two shows about high schools: Riverdale and newcomer All American. The freshman series is about a South Crenshaw High football player who gets recruited by a coach (Taye Diggs) from Beverly Hills High School. The student has to learn to then blend his two worlds in a story that was inspired by the life of NFL player Spencer Paysinger.
The other big news out of the CW is that three of its comedic series — Jane the Virgin, iZombie, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend — will end after next season. The fourth and final act of Crazy Ex will debut in the fall but the other two series are being held for midseason along with The 100 and new shows Roswell, New Mexico and In the Dark.
