While Pokemon won the pocket monster wars of its era, Digimon wasn’t down for long by the time the dust had cleared. Recently, the digital monsters franchise has been making a comeback with new movies and video games, soon you can get your hands on the recent feature film Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning when it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD. Continuing the saga of Daisuke (Davis) Motomiya and the rest of the DigiDestined, the film will be released on June 11 and follows the Digimon Adventure crew after they’ve grown up into young adults.
“It’s 2012, and 10 years have passed since the adventure in the Digital World,” the film’s plot synopsis reads. “Daisuke Motomiya is now 20, and he and the rest of the DigiDestined seem to be changing bit by bit in terms of appearance and lifestyle. Then one day, a giant Digitama suddenly appears in the sky over Tokyo Tower. Daisuke and the others encounter a mysterious young man named Lui Ohwada, who informs them that he’s the first ever DigiDestined in the world.”
In addition to the film getting a crisp Blu-ray format release, you’ll also receive a limited-edition Digimon Card Game promotional pack and an introduction from Director Tomohisa Taguchi as part of the Blu-ray extras. It comes with a DVD as well, just in case you need a low-definition back-up. If you’re looking to catch up on Digimon, this is actually a very good time to do so before you even watch the new film.
First up, the complete original series has been heavily discounted on Amazon and its sequel series Digimon Adventure 02 will arrive on Blu-ray on May 28.
This was a 50-episode series that began airing in 2000, and this release is for the English dub version. Once you’re done binging the series, you can watch the previous film in the series, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, and witness the climatic final adventure of Tai and Agumon. That’ll leave you prepared and ready for Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning, a movie that was well-received by fans of the franchise when it came out last year.
