Everyone’s favorite video game bad guy (but he’s not a “bad guy”) is coming back to theaters. Disney revealed that Wreck-It Ralph 2 has been slated for release on March 9th, 2018. It’s confirmed that John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman will be returning as Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz. The story is still unknown at this time, but the broad concept is pretty easy to figure out from this first piece of concept art:
That’s right, Ralph and Vanellope’s next adventure will see them traversing the vast landscape of the Internet. I’m sure there will be some subtle adult innuendos that arise from this. Any chance Ralph can make a stop at 4chan and destroy it?
The original Wreck-It Ralph was a wonderful love letter to video games of the past, and while the basic idea of Ralph and Vanellope exploring the endless landscape of the world wide web will allow for plenty of comedy, I feel a little trepidation in regards to this sequel. Will the characters stray further away from classic video game characters? Wreck-It Ralph certainly handled Q*bert better than Pixels did, and it’d be a shame if Wreck-It Ralph 2 fell victim to parodying modern meme culture or dated Internet fads. Do we really need a montage of Ralph and Vanellope jumping through YouTube videos? The filmmakers will have to walk a fine line so that the sequel doesn’t come across as instantly dated.
Regardless, the team behind Wreck-It Ralph is returning and that film is a real treasure. There’s no reason to doubt their talent at this point. Plus, Reilly and Silverman were a perfect and adorable comedy duo, so reuniting them is reason enough to get excited. We’ll be keeping a sharp eye on this production. Hopefully, we’ll be hearing more news soon.
I just hope Zangief will show up again.
