From the studio who brought us Knights of Sidonia and Ajin: Demi-Human comes a new adaptation of the Japanese monster classic, Godzilla (Gojira). The latest adaptation in the Toho Franchise will be a Godzilla anime movie and is set to arrive next year.

All we know about the latest animated adaptation is that Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita are scheduled to direct. They’ve directed significant genre works ranging from Fist of the North Star to the Polygon Studio hit Knights of Sidonia. Their work is undeniable, jaw-dropping, and every other synonym for magnificent.

The film also credits Gen Urobuchi for the story concept and screenplay. Urobuchi’s work is something that you might call “outside the box.” Like many of his works, he deviates from the norm but also deconstructs the genre. Such works include Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass, and the magical girl anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Possible Storyline

new Godzilla anime movie

While the new website does not reveal much information about the new anime film, it does feature some striking concept art. From what we can tell the movie will follow three people who landed – either intentionally or not – on a blue-tinted valley.  Their body language seems to show that they are more curious than afraid.  While the film is about the giant monster, it’s nowhere to be seen. But, we doubt that it will remain hidden for long. It’ll be interesting if this fits into the cinematic universe Godzilla is joining. Skull Island and future King Kong films all tie into the mythos begun with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. More likely it’ll relate to the recent Toho effort Godzilla Resurgence.

Animated Godzilla

This new anime film which will be co-produced by Polygon Pictures. It doesn’t have an exact release date yet aside from the very vague “2017”. If you can’t wait till next year, the franchise already inspired two animated series. The first animated series premiered in 1978, named Godzilla. The second show, Godzilla: The Series served as a direct follow-up to the 1998 American Godzilla film. If you dare.
