It’s been almost two years since we last saw John-117 on TV, and those final revelations of the first season of Halo have stayed with us the whole time. Now, the highly anticipated second season is coming exclusively to Paramount+ on February 8, and hundreds of questions have been running through fans’ heads since that explosive season finale.
But, as season two draws closer and closer, we’ve narrowed down the five most pressing and burning questions we have for Halo that we need answered.
What is Dr. Halsey’s end game?
At the end of the first season, one of the biggest twists came in Dr. Halsey’s treason and escape. By using a flash clone, she was able to escape imprisonment by the UNSC virtually undetected and arrive at Reach without harm. We don’t know just how long she was using the flash clone, but we know she’s made enemies of the UNSC and of Master Chief himself. Turns out that manipulating memories might result in a breach of trust.
But, now she’s escaped, what will Dr. Halsey be planning next? We last saw her pondering the mere existence of humanity, fearing that we’re ‘not ready’ for what comes next. Will she go the extra mile, even beyond her treasonous activities, to make sure we are ready? Was Cortana just the start? We’ll have to wait and find out.
Speaking of Cortana, will Master Chief ever be the same?
At the end of season 1, John-117 made the ultimate sacrifice, taking a fatal shot in order to save Team Silver. However, this also meant that Cortana, the AI modelled by and on Dr. Halsey, had to take control of the Master Chief we spent season 1 growing to love. The very last scene of season 1 is Kai asking him whether it’s really him, to which he just stares. The John-117 of Paramount+’s Halo was brave, passionate and vulnerable — will we be able to see any of those traits we love in season 2?
When will we see Kwan?
If mysteries swirled around John and Halsey from Halo’s season 1 finale, what’s happening with Kwan is completely up in the air. Not being seen since episode 7, we last saw her as she parted ways with Soren and was determined to find the portal. But, since then, we’ve seen major events take place that shift the trajectory for all characters, yet Kwan is nowhere to be seen.
It’ll be exciting to see where we run into Kwan next, how her mission is travelling and how she pushes on while John-117 prepares to take on The Covenant.
Finally, what about Makee?
Makee was such a crucial and pivotal character in the first season of Halo. Being the ultimate double agent, forming a strong connection with John while being at the mercy of The Covenant, she was our ultimate conduit between protagonist and antagonist. She also served as a constant reminder of one of the series’ biggest themes — the idea of good and evil is never as clear cut as some might think. But, after Makee saved John by generating a blast by activating the keystones (and letting us all know where the Halo is), Kai shot Makee, and it appeared to be fatal.
But, is it really all it seems? Could Makee have survived? If so, has she cemented her position as John-117 prepares to take on The Covenant? If she is indeed dead, then how will this Cortana-led John reckon with that loss, and how will it influence him going forward?
