Terrence Malick‘s Knight of Cups should be on everyone’s radar. The director of Badlands, The Thin Red Line, The New World, and The Tree of Life always creates films that are both enigmatic and yet understandably human. This newest endeavor looks to follow his style perfectly, and we’ve just gotten a brand new poster that’s equally perfect. Tarot imagery is so powerful and iconic, and it’s enthralling to see it used in the poster art below.
Knight of Cups centers on Rick (Christian Bale), a disillusioned West Coast writer searching for love from both outside and within. As he struggles to navigate the warped dreamscape of his life, his odyssey throws him into situations with six different women. Some are from his past while others are strangers he meets along the way. As the film progresses, Rick begins to learn that searching for what he’s after is more important than reaching his desired goal.
Even Malick’s more accessible films tend to be divisive, but it’s hard to argue that he’s ever resting on his laurels. He’s written all of his directorial efforts and has never been afraid of putting himself out there in a narrative way. Knight of Cups certainly looks to be Malick’s commentary on modern Hollywood culture; a line that sticks out in the trailer is, “No one cares about reality anymore.” It will be intriguing to see Malick’s unique and existential perspective on the shallowness of today’s world, especially after such a metaphysical mission statement as The Tree of Life.
The cast alone should entice you: Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, and Imogen Poots are all in this. Only Malick’s The Thin Red Line had an equally stunning cast list.
Knight of Cups will hit theaters on March 4. We here at Fandom can’t wait.
