CGI animals have been a part of movies for decades, but sometimes it’s hard to believe the kinds of effects we used to think of as cutting edge. Nowadays, we might scoff at the 80s attempts at CGI but at the time they were jaw-dropping (kind of). Crucially, they were a critical step on the path to realistic animals as CGI – as displayed by Disney’s The Lion King, where CGI animals could be mistaken for extremely well-trained, highly expressive real creatures.
