Disney CEO Bob Iger has gone on record saying that Marvel Studios will be making movies until the end of time. With thousands of characters at their disposal, the mammoth studio has no intention of ever getting out of the superhero business. When asked about audiences experiencing superhero fatigue, Iger brushed the comment off by stating how Marvel will continue to raise the bar with their stories and characters.
From a business standpoint, Disney has no reason to stop making Marvel movies. Even the ones that have had less than stellar acclaim have made money, and there aren’t any signs of mainstream audiences getting fed up with these stories. Marvel is also very aware that they can’t keep telling the same kinds of stories. Guardians of the Galaxy is a perfect indication of this; the atypical superhero movie is something that Marvel doesn’t feel beholden to. Their enormous cast of characters allows them to make different kinds of movies that just happen to feature lead characters in colorful costumes. Even Ant-Man was able to put a twist on its tale by integrating a heist film into its plot.
The bigger question has more to do with the serialized nature of these films. In a way, each successive Marvel movie is a continuation of the last one; you can’t really go from Captain America: The First Avenger to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It’s this unique idea of a film series that features a variety of disparate stories that somehow become one cohesive world. We’ll have to see how this approach also works with Disney’s other big property, Star Wars.
We here at Fandom are more than happy with Marvel continuing to make movies until we’ve shuffled off this mortal coil. As long as they can keep delivering the kind of enjoyable fare that makes us fans happy, we’ll keep coming back.
