Creepy hallways full of roaming ghosts, an apartment complex where everyone is brutally murdered, and an elementary school floor covered in the blood and guts of young children — these are but a small sample of the horrific buildings found in anime. Many of these have a dark history sure to give viewers nightmares for days. Here are the five spookiest houses and schools in anime.

Heavenly Host Elementary School — Corpse Party: Tortured Soul

Once considered the pride of Tenjin, Heavenly Host Elementary School quickly became the most desirable school in the area to attend. However, its walls hide a very dark secret. The school’s nurse, Ms. Shinozaki, and her daughter Sachiko were murdered and buried on the school’s grounds — all to cover up a sexual assault and protect the school’s reputation.

Seeking revenge for their murders, Sachiko becomes an evil, cruel spirit and convinces one of the teachers to kidnap, torture, and kill several students to appease her mother’s lonely soul. After the horrific murders, the school was torn down. But, thanks to Sachiko’s powers, it continues to exist on the spiritual plane — complete with vengeful spirits from which no one can escape.

Soon enough, the sinister Sachiko becomes the murderous tyrant of Heavenly Host, luring children to her with a false friendship ritual. Sachiko’s minions then roam the halls, hunting down the young victims to torture and kill them.

Ushiromiya Mansion — Umineko When They Cry

Imagine having a family reunion in a giant mansion in the middle of a beautiful isolated island. Your aunts, uncles, and cousins all come together to discuss the family’s current financial situation. But suddenly, one of them is brutally murdered. Hysteria overtakes everyone. You grow suspicious of each other, and with no way to call for help, you perish one by one. The halls of this once-beautiful mansion now covered with blood and despair.

This happens to the Ushiromiyas when they visit the head of the family, Kinzo Ushiromiya, on Rokkenjima island. In just one day, the entire family gets slaughtered. But it’s the endless horror that makes the Ushiromiya mansion one of the creepiest buildings in anime. The murders all take place within 24 hours, with the houseguests dying in mysterious and gruesome ways — like when Battler Ushiromiya, finds several family members dead in their locked rooms, with stakes in their foreheads. Then it starts all over again. That’s right, the day repeats itself, forcing the family to relive their tragic deaths.

The Doll House — Ghost Hunt

Everyone loves an old-fashioned haunted house — unless you’re the one trapped inside it. The Ghost Hunt episode “The Doll House” gives viewers the old one-two punch by combining an old house with creepy kids. When high school student Mai Taniyama breaks the camera of 17-year-old Kazuya Shibuya, a detective from Shibuya Psychic Research, she unexpectedly finds herself investigating paranormal activities throughout Japan. One case brings her and the other the investigators to an old, supposedly haunted house.

What they find, though, is something more sinister than a ghost. A little girl claims her doll has been speaking to her, demanding to spend more time with her. If that doesn’t already send chills down your spine, then perhaps frightening accidents the previous residents have suffered will — all of them resulting in the death of young children. Now, these children’s corrupt spirits are the ones killing everyone who sets foot in the house.

Ogawa Apartment Complex — The Garden of Sinners: Paradox Spiral

Hauntings and spooky scenes aren’t exclusive to old buildings. Just take a look at the Ogawa Apartment Complex, an ominous, circular structure featured in The Garden of Sinners: Paradox Spiral that deviates from the standard spooky house trope.

One day, a young man stabs his family to death in a fit of rage before escaping his apartment in a panic. Soon after, a burglar finds the family’s mutilated bodies. But to his surprise, when he returns with the police, the occupants are in perfect health. Clearly, there’s more to this building than meets the eye.

The apartment complex’s sadistic designer intended for the building to drive residents insane enough to commit murder. Even more horrifying, the complex has them repeatedly relive their final day alive. With hundreds of corpses winding up on the other side of the structure, it appears there’s no end in sight to this miniature hell.

Yomiyama North Middle School — Another

scariest anime buildings Yomiyama North Middle School from Another

Schools are supposed to be a safe place — until paranormal activity’s added to the mix. When that happens, it’s best to stay home. Unfortunately, the students in Another didn’t heed our advice. Now, a group of Yomiyama North Middle School students must try to survive a curse that’s been plaguing their classroom since the ’70s.

This isn’t just a case of bad luck, either. Several students suffer gruesome, frightening deaths that many incorrectly brush off as strange accidents. Sure, because falling down a flight of stairs and getting stabbed in the neck with an umbrella is what we’d call an “accident.”

It all starts when a popular student dies unexpectedly. Instead of saying their final goodbyes to their newly departed classmate, the students decide to carry on as if he’s still alive. From that point on, Yomiyama becomes a place plagued by death, especially Class 3-3.

Each year, an extra dead student or faculty member appears in the class and lives like a normal person until the school year’s end. This would probably be fine if their presence didn’t bring death to those around them. So, be wary of any unexpected extra people in your class.
