Update: The official Nintendo Store in the UK opened its SNES Mini pre-order service that allowed customers to make sure they could get one come September 29 when the console is released.
The pre-order page limited customers to buying one per order, but that still didn’t stop the SNES Mini flying off the shelves. In less than an hour the console was already out of stock.
That comes hours after Nintendo issued a statement saying it would “produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition”.
Original Story: The SNES Mini is en route later this year, but fans are already concerned that the mini revival console will have the same stock issues as the NES Mini did at the end of last year.
From launch to its unceremonious discontinuation, the NES Mini proved quite the elusive beast, with gamers struggling to ever buy one due to ridiculous stock shortages.
Because of that, gamers are rushing to try and secure their pre-orders while the SNES Mini stock is hot. Nintendo is promising that the SNES Mini stock when it launches on September 27 will be better than the NES Mini availability was.
“We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition,” said Nintendo in a statement to Kotaku.
“Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship September 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding possible shipments beyond this year.”
Huh? Hang on, wait a minute. Nintendo is currently only planning to sell the SNES Mini from September until the end of December? We smell a SNES Mini stock crisis already, mostly because after Christmas you won’t be able to buy one.
“Our long-term efforts are focused on delivering great games for the Nintendo Switch system and continuing to build momentum for that platform, as well as serving the more than 63m owners of Nintendo 3DS family systems,” explained Nintendo.
“We are offering Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition in special recognition of the fans who show tremendous interest our classic content.”
Hmm, we’re not convinced about how many gamers will be able to get hold of the SNES Mini unless they pre-order one, so make sure to get one in the bag before it comes out in September if you really want one.
