Star Wars: Battlefront II primarily takes place between Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Episode VII: The Force Awakens, with a focus on the Imperial side of the story told through the lens of Iden Versio. While there are plenty of space battles and blaster fights, there are two solid moments that anchor the game in the greater Star Wars movie universe.

Return of the Jedi

Destruction of the Death Star over Endor
Destruction of the Death Star over Endor

As any passing Star Wars fan knows, the Rebellion emerged victorious in the Battle of Endor, despite being led by the nose into a trap. The scenes in Episode VI are ones of celebration after the destruction of the second Death Star. It not only marked an important turning point in the war, but also the deaths of Emperor Palapatine and Darth Vader.

Star Wars: Battlefront II shows the aftermath from the point of Imperial forces stranded on the surface of Endor. Iden and her team are stunned as they witness the Death Star explode overhead. Despite overwhelming grief at having seen countless of their comrades perish, they push ahead, working to escape a planet now overrun with the enemy.

The Force Awakens

The Empire's defeat on Jakku
The Empire's defeat on Jakku

With the most recent generation of Star Wars aficionados came Episode VII. The opening scenes take place on the planet Jakku where, decades before, the final battle of the Galactic Civil War took place. The Empire was destroyed, and many of their ships were left to rust in the constant heat of the desert sun. This is where the newest hero of the Force is revealed – Rey – as she delves inside the cavernous husk of an Imperial Star Destroyer. It is an iconic scene.

That’s where the second anchor for Battlefront II comes in. Iden and her loyal soldiers switch to the Rebellion and participate in this pivotal battle. She eventually crash-lands at its summation, emerging from her cockpit to find the Rebellion victorious. As she and her friends top one of the dunes, a smoldering Star Destroyer is spotted in the distance. This is a near-perfect duplication of the scene witnessed at the outset of Episode VII.
