Huzzah! Star Wars: The Last Jedi is finally out in theaters. Its been two years since The Force Awakens premiered in theaters. It’s also been two years since The Force Awakens broke every single box office record there is. Now that we’re into sequel territory, how will The Last Jedi hold up to its predecessor? Will it trail behind, hold steady against or surpass The Force Awakens? Let’s take a look at the numbers.

The Box Office Awakens

The Force Awakens was a box office phenomenon. The numbers kept climbing and climbing until the film shattered nearly every record it could. For instance, The Force Awakens broke the record for biggest US opening in history with $247 million. It was also the fastest film to hit $1 billion at the box office, globally — in only 12 days. It’s the highest-grossing Star Wars film in history and, settling at $2.06 billion worldwide, the highest-grossing film of all time and Disney’s most successful.

So how did the sequel hold up? Star Wars: The Last Jedi made $220 million in the US on its opening weekend and $230 million in other countries. Those numbers come in under The Force Awakens by a small margin. It may not have surpassed The Force Awakens’ numbers, but it did beat everyone else’s. A $220 million opening weekend puts it far above films like  Jurassic World and The Avengers, who managed to break the $200 million mark with $208 million and $207 million, respectively.

So, is The Last Jedi on track to join the billion-dollar movie club? It’s currently sitting at $450 million at the global box office and still hasn’t opened in China. China always brings in large box office numbers. Since its a Star Wars property and many families go to the movies during holidays, the film should continue to follow in The Force Awakens’ footsteps with a hefty box office take.
