Terminator: Dark Fate is the newest entry in the landmark Terminator franchise. James Cameron returns to produce and co-write this exciting new installment, which in our tech-focused reality, is more relevant than ever. The diverse, predominantly female cast is comprised of Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), Grace (Mackenzie Davis) and Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and will follow their journey to escape the Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna) – a new Terminator sent to hunt Dani.

If you need a quick refresher on these evil robots from the future, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know before you see Terminator: Dark Fate.

The original Terminator introduces us to a future where humanity has nearly been wiped out by an army of machines led by a self-aware artificial intelligence called Skynet. The few remaining humans band together under the leadership of John Connor, who eventually finds a way to defeat the machines.

Skynet creates a time machine and sends an android assassin — the Terminator — back in time to kill John Connor’s mother, Sarah, before John is even born. Sarah is able to defeat the Terminator with the help of Kyle Reese, a resistance fighter sent from the future by John himself. Shortly before he tragically dies, he falls in love with Sarah and turns out to be John’s biological father!

Years later, Skynet sends another Terminator back in time to assassinate a 10-year-old John Connor. And this one is a liquid metal, shape-changing upgrade from the last one. However, the resistance also sends a reprogrammed Terminator to be John’s protector.

This time, Sarah is determined to change the course of the future and prevent Skynet from ever taking over. She succeeds and it seems that Skynet’s ultimate plan — releasing nuclear warheads across the globe to wipe out all of civilization in an event known as Judgment Day — is thwarted.

Which leads us to Terminator: Dark Fate. In this new installment, a brand-new Terminator (that can actually split in two thanks to a robotic endoskeleton and a liquid metal exterior) is sent back in time to kill Dani Ramos. Exactly why she is the target is an intriguing mystery.

The resistance sends back a human named Grace, who is an augmented super soldier that shows up in Mexico on a mysterious mission to protect Dani. And Sarah Connor once again joins the fight with a mysterious ally.

Will humanity be able to stop the machines once again? The 2019 viewer who experiences actual AI in their every-day life, will be thrilled to find out when Terminator: Dark Fate opens in theaters in October.
