SPOILER ALERT: Warning, this article contains minor spoilers for The Gifted season 2. Proceed at your own risk.
During their panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), the cast of The Gifted revealed new details about the show’s upcoming sophomore season title: “Dawn of the Mutant Age.” The show’s first season focused on Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes White) discovering their mutant abilities and joining the Mutant Underground.
By the season finale, the Underground had splintered into two different factions. Some mutants, including Andy and Polaris (Emma Dumont), left to join the Hellfire Club, believing humans and mutants could no longer co-exist.
Season 2 of The Gifted will delve deeper into the mysterious 7/15 event — which led to the disappearance of the X-Men and the Brotherhood — and the growing divide between the current mutants. And if the extended trailer shown at SDCC is any hint, it will also show more of Polaris’ pregnancy and how the baby will affect her powers and the other mutants.
(More) Strucker Family Drama
The Strucker family went through a lot in Season 1 of The Gifted and their troubles aren’t over yet. The family is fractured. Lauren’s main concern is reuniting with her brother and bringing him back to the “good” side. But Andy is on his own journey with the Hellfire Club and continuing to dig up more about his family’s history — including his father’s.
Stephen Moyer, who plays Reed, says that because his character had his mutant gene suppressed as a child, he had his “destiny taken away from him.” In a scene from the extended trailer during the con, it appeared that Reed may be developing some mutant powers of his own as well. He is “trying to unlock what he really is,” teases Moyer.
Baby on Board
Season 2 of The Gifted takes place six months after the events of the Season 1 finale. Polaris, at this point, is nine months pregnant, and she looks her very fearful about her impending labor in the trailer. Both she and Eclipse (Sean Teale) are dealing with the ramifications of their choices and from being apart during such a major, life-changing event. Eclipse is also dealing with the disintegration of his other family — the Mutant Underground.
“He is a very volatile person and a very passionate person … What he has within him is the ability to find light in all of the darkness,” says Sean Teale. Season 2 will see Eclipse more “jaded and damaged” than before. But he also has to step up and become more of a leader now that Polaris is gone and rally the remaining mutants to continue fighting for the cause. It looks like it’s going to be an emotional season for #Eclaris.
The Gifted Season 2 premieres on Tuesday, September 25th at 8 PM on Fox.
