The CW has released a single image of Kryptonian cousins Kara Zor-El and Kal El together for the first time. The pair, better known to mere mortals as Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) will join forces in the first two episodes of the upcoming second season of the Supergirl TV show. Take your first look at the Super-family reunion.
This is the first time we’re seeing Hoechlin in cape and tights. He was cast a month ago and reported to Vancouver to begin filming this week. So far, he says the experience has been, “Definitely incredibly surreal. I know the character represents so much to so many people.” Prior to the release of today’s artwork, we’d only seen an illustration of the new Man of Steel courtesy of the production’s storyboard artist Jeremy Simser.
The familiar S-shield is a symbol recognized by our entire planet but Hoechlin says, as an actor, he can’t really look at it that way. “Realizing that this is just like any other person putting on a suit in the morning, going out to do what they do. That’s kind of made it a little bit easier to approach it.” And, since his will be the character’s first real appearance on Supergirl, Hoechlin has free reign to create his Clark Kent/Superman from the ground up. During the first season of Supergirl, her cousin was mentioned from time to time but he was only ever seen as a blue and red blur, an unconscious form on a table or in silhouette.
According to producers, Hoechlin’s first appearance won’t be a happy family reunion as the cousins have different opinions on what responsibilities come with their super-abilities.
Supergirl is moving from CBS to the CW this fall to join the network’s other DC heroes. The season premiere is set for air on Monday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. You can get caught up on the first season of Supergirl right now over at supergirl.wikia.com.
