Sam Raimi, legendary creator of the Evil Dead franchise, is returning to the genre once more in a producing role for new supernatural horror flick, The Unholy.
Raimi has worked on giving people the creeps since the start of his career, making The Evil Dead with Bruce Campbell and Joel Coen (of the Coen brothers) when they were all barely out of college. Since then, he’s gone on to direct Army of Darkness, Drag Me To Hell, and produced the 2016 hit thriller Don’t Breathe.
The Unholy follows Alice, a young hearing-impaired girl who, after a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary, is inexplicably able to hear, speak and heal the sick. As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist – played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan of The Walking Dead fame – visits the small New England town to investigate.
When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something more sinister. The film questions the nature of religious miracles and who exactly hears our prayers.
The film is based upon the book Shrine by legendary English horror writer James Herbert and is written and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulous.
Morgan stars alongside Katie Aselton, William Sadler, Cricket Brown, Diogo Morgado, and Cary Elwes in the horror flick.
The Unholy will be released in cinemas across Australia on April 15.
