Carnage is one of the most beloved villains in the Spider-Man universe. The serial killer Cletus Kasady bonded with an alien symbiote that spawned from the creature known as Venom. He’s one of the most violent and terrifying adversaries in the Marvel canon. Fans have been hoping to see him in a feature film for years. And now, they are getting their wish.
Sony has confirmed that Carnage will be the main antagonist in Venom, the upcoming movie starring Tom Hardy as the titular anti-hero. There isn’t a casting announcement yet but you can bet this will be a role that demands a lot. Carnage is basically the Joker of the Spider-Man world. He’s joyously evil and isn’t afraid of murdering plenty of people just for the fun of it. Which does beg a big question…
Does This Confirm Venom Is R-Rated?
The scuttlebutt is that Venom is going to be a horror film with the potential to be R-rated. That’s not official but successes like Logan and Deadpool have opened the gates wide for R-rated superhero fare. And the inclusion of Carnage goes a long way in confirming this suspicion.
Carnage is infamous for being one of the most violent villains in the Marvel universe. There are many fans who might feel like he needs to be represented that way in Venom. And that’s going to be tough to do within the confines of a PG-13 rating.
If violence is one of the main selling points of the film, it will be interesting to see how close Sony wants to connect Venom to Spider-Man. That character and series are firmly rooted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and those films have no intention of heading into R-rated territory. The balancing act Sony is going to have to do will be something to watch.
Regardless, this is great news for fans. Carnage has been rumored for a number of movies but now he’s finally headed to the big screen. Now, how about some of these other villains?
