What We Do in the Shadows was easily one of the best films of 2015. The vampire mockumentary had loads of humor and a surprising amount of heart, all while maintaining a faithfulness to classic vampire lore that was incredibly refreshing. Director/writer/actor Taika Waititi recently landed a gig as director of Thor: Ragnarok, but he’s still committed to making a follow-up to his beloved vampire comedy.
In that film, the vampire trio ran afoul of some werewolves (lead by Flight of the Conchords‘ Rhys Darby) that led to some of the funniest lines in the movie (“We’re werewolves, not swearwolves.”). Waititi has said that the sequel would be focused on the werewolf culture of New Zealand, leading many to believe that the title would be What We Do in the Moonlight. Leave to Waititi and co-writer Jemaine Clement to come up with something much, much better.
While doing interviews for his film Hunt for the Wilderpeople (which is premiering at Sundance), Waititi revealed that the title for the sequel would be We’re Wolves. It’s one of those simply genius titles that I’m surprised no one has used it yet, but I’m glad they haven’t because it fits perfectly with the sense of humor that Waititi cultivated in the first film.
If you haven’t seen What We Do in the Shadows, you really are missing out. We’re still pretty far away from We’re Wolves thanks to Waititi having to close out the Thor trilogy, but the sequel title alone is reason enough to start getting excited. Take this opportunity to get your hands on a copy of What We Do in the Shadows. You won’t regret it.
