The audience last night was all in. The tension was thick. The gasps were plentiful and earned. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a great audience movie, one which benefits from as little knowledge as possible beforehand. The trailers are mysterious and before seeing the movie it seems like too little. Having seen the movie, they show too much.
For audiences craving a return to the world showcased in Cloverfield, the film may not be the elixir they hope for. This is as far tonally from 2008’s surprise hit as possible without leaving the genre. The original film to bear the “Cloverfield” brand was a frantic first-person bit of sleight of hand that descended into a ground level monster movie. The new film is a tense, expertly made thriller with a few tricks up its sleeve. Suffice it to say that 10 Cloverfield Lane is every bit as thrilling, scary, and effective as the first but it’s a much more structured piece.
The video above represents the best way to go in. As blind as possible. We’ll revisit 10 Cloverfield Lane in detail next week after audiences have had a chance to experience it. The only thing you need to know now is that you need to see it. It’s a keeper.
