The reign of Deadpool has ended but not before the Ryan Reynolds smash made a big statement, tallying an estimated $311,158,132 to date. There’s nothing negative to be taken from the film’s bold statement both creatively and financially. With that said, it’s time to crown Zootopia as the year’s next juggernaut.
The Disney animation film rode great reviews and a dearth of quality family alternatives to box office gold. Pulling in an estimated $73,700,000, the film is the highest opening Disney Animation release ever. The collateral damage from both films enjoying strong weekends affected last week’s releases and the Tina Fey vehicle Whisky Tango Foxtrot. It’s too bad for the film, because it’s a good one that probably would have benefited from a November release slot. London has Fallen did a solid $21,714,000 but it wasn’t enough to make a dent in Zootopia‘s business.
All in all it was a robust weekend and the floodgates should be open for quite some time. Next week is a mystery with the eventual take of the enigmatic 10 Cloverfield Lane being the big x-factor.
The Numbers Game
I’ve added a little fun into the box office report. A little guessing game. Let’s see how close we can get to guessing the correct box office numbers for the movies opening next week.
Last Week:
Zootopia
My Guess: $45,000,000
Actual: $73,700,000
Result: Never underestimate talking animals.
London Has Fallen
My Guess: $14,000,000
Actual: $21,714,000
Result: Never underestimate the destruction of a major city.
Whisky Tango Foxtrot
My Guess: $15,000,000
Actual: $7,600,000
Result: Never overestimate quality drama and comedy.
This week:
10 Cloverfield Lane
Without taking into consideration the quality of the film and how much it actually ties in to the original Cloverfield film (our recollection here) 10 Cloverfield Lane could be a monster or an afterthought. If the film is kept safely under wraps until its Thursday night showings the mystery could be enough to attract a sizable audience.
My guess: $28,500,000
The Brothers Grimsby
As much as Sasha Baron Cohen has dominated the charts over the years, there’s simply not enough real awareness for The Brothers Grimsby yet. The overseas market seems to find it of merit but there are a lot of variables with a film from Cohen that isn’t a straight-up Borat-style film nor a traditional narrative.
My guess: $11,000,000
See you next week!
